Region 8 Winner: Lori Shirley

When I was pregnant with my third child, I became an excuse mom.  “I’m just going to gain weight anyway, I’ll eat whatever I want.”  “I’ll be healthy after I have the baby.”  Pretty soon I realized it was getting out of control, but with pregnancy hormones raging, becoming healthy seemed like an insurmountable task.  I was sore, tired, and embarrassed that I had let myself get this bad.  During my other pregnancies I gained 25-35 lbs.  This time, I reached my due date knowing that I had 60+ lbs to lose.  I stopped looking at the scale, because I didn’t want to see the number go over 200, even though I knew it would.

On February 10, 2016, I delivered a beautiful, healthy baby girl.  She brought such a sweet joy into our home.  She also brought the chaos of being out numbered, sleepless nights, and recovering from pregnancy.  I knew I should be watching my portions and focusing on healthy eating, but I felt overwhelmed at the idea.  Months went by and I was struggling with depression.  I knew I wanted to have more children, but I didn’t feel like I should when I was in such a negative place.  Though I had lost 20 lbs within the first few weeks, I was now stuck at around 185 lbs.  I was exercising but didn’t feel like I was making progress.  That’s when I saw a friend who was hosting a 6 week challenge.  I decided to go for it, and it gave me the motivation and accountability I needed to get started.  I began to make progress and for the first time in over a year I was exercising consistently!  During the 6 week challenge I saw Maria post about the NEM challenge.  I knew it was the perfect thing to keep me on track and hold myself accountable.

I joined a gym for the first time in my life and started going to classes at 6 a.m.  I had always told myself I couldn’t wake up that early to go workout, but I put those excuses aside and I did it!  I loved the things I was learning and the ways I was strengthening my body.  I felt more energy as I took on the gallon challenge and focused on fruits and vegetables.  I still had bad days, but I no longer felt out of control.

After I had my baby, I was so discouraged and disgusted with myself… with the way my stomach flab felt when I sat down, with the way my thighs rubbed together everywhere, with the way I looked in pictures.  My body transformed, but more importantly, my countenance transformed.  I had a light in my eyes that was missing before.  12 weeks ago, I was struggling with depression, discouragement, and not liking what I saw when I looked at myself.  Today I am happier, more hopeful, more grateful, more energetic, more loving, and more determined than ever to live the life I am meant to live by being emotionally and physically healthy.
I love me again, and that’s the best transformation I could have hoped for!

I am worth it.  All of us are worth it.  Thank you, Maria and all of the other amazing women at NEM.  You are saving lives by inspiring women to take control of their health!  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!
