Overall NEM Winner: Krista Roberts

During this twelve-week challenge I learned that by being disciplined the results will come. I have come to understand that no matter what I have going on I must make time for exercise. The results I have achieved have proven this. I have managed to drop 10.5 pounds and 17.25 inches overall during this challenge and am so very proud of myself. I also learned that nutrition is key. I have lost a taste for processed foods and sugar. I have become quite creative in the kitchen and have developed healthy alternatives to some of my favorite dishes. I enjoy coming up with new ways to make tasty dishes my family will eat and take pride that I am helping them to make good choices. One of the most important things I learned is that I must practice self-care and take time for myself if I want to be a help to others. The exercise calendar was my religion. I recorded my workouts daily and even added words of inspiration and encouragement to focus on!
I honestly feel the thing that held me back was the fear of not seeing results. I had a bad habit of chaining myself to the scale and using that to define how I felt on any given day. I still use the scale, but discern how I feel by using my workouts as my guide. My energy levels and moods were so much better after a workout. I always had excuses to not workout. I used to use the excuse that I am just too out of shape to ever run. I am now running a 5k comfortably and am training for a Tri-sprint in April! I ran two 5k’s this past year and one was during the challenge period! I will turn 50 next year and I am challenging myself to a lofty goal. I know I can do this!
I have discovered that although I may not be the best at something initially I can be with perseverance and dedication. I also learned that by allowing others to challenge me and support my journey I can achieve anything I set my mind to. My NEM’s group here in Stafford, Virginia is amazing, and our fearless leader Lacey Calkins is a true badass! I told myself if Lacey could workout while being pregnant, I had no reason not to! My environment is full of opportunity to cross train and I am surrounded by women who are my biggest supporters. They understand the struggle to be all you can for your family and to attempt to be strong enough to care for yourself. My family was a blessing. They ate what I ate and tried super hard to not bring any sugary foods (my Achilles heel) into the house. I treated them to an occasional sweet dish on my cheat days and learned that it was ok if it did not become a habit. I cherish what I have learned and plan to continue.
