Effervescent (adj.) — giving off bubbles; fizzy. Can also mean vivacious and enthusiastic. For our most recent Positivity Award winner, this term is apt. He’s bubbly, he’s vivacious and gosh darn it if he hasn’t told you how much he loves November Project in the past 12 minutes. Folks, without further ado, please enjoy the always effervescent Tom Nicocelli.

How were you introduced to November Project?
I was buying coffee at Whole Foods Foggy Bottom on a Wednesday in early May and I overheard two people in front of me (who now I know are Libby and Kathleen) saying something like, “The workout today was great!” and I noticed that they knew other people behind me and in front of me. I kept my cool pretending I did not hear and I asked my friend the barista at Whole Foods (full disclosure: I work at Whole Foods, but not at this one) what was going on. She said, “Hi, Tom, they are the runners and there are lots of people and they are here every Wednesday!” I was like, “Runners? I am a runner too, let me check what is going on here.”

Gate 2 (YEG)

The sk8ter grls and bois busted a move this morning and while it may have been hard to see the contagious laughter and play brought a smile to my face.

Time and time again you bring forth the best in yourselves and build up a community of like minded people. In this kind of environment anything is possible. We are going into our winter season but that is just a challenge. Have you been looking for that next race? for that next step? Power through. Power through this season and build up your base. Believe in yourself and build up to a better you. I cannot wait to see what you can do.

When I was living in Boston, you would find me running at one of the 3 run clubs I was a part of/led. I’d be at multiple races every weekend and I’d be surrounded by a BRF (Best Running Friend) or two at every turn. I LOVED meeting blog readers & motivating new people to get on the running bandwagon. 2019 No Excuses Pot Challenge

Are you ready for some serious motivation???
On September 3 we are beginning our 7th annual international pot transformation contest with all our No Excuse Moms! For 12 weeks, we are asking you to eat healthily, get active and be purposeful in your daily intentions. This was created to connect us as No Excuse Moms, motivate us before the holidays and transform us in a limited period of time. Contest Ends November 28th  *all pictures are due by that date, which lands on Thanksgiving! For the last several years we have given over 100 winners thousands in pot money!
If you lose a healthy average of 1-2lbs/week for the next 12 weeks, you will be 12-25lbs lighter in 12 weeks! If you are heavily overweight, you will lose more weight. Click here to submit payment and receive an application via email.
Here are our guidelines, (these are NOT set in stone):
1. Drink only water, black coffee/tea
2. Eat balanced meals comprising of 30% lean protein, 30% healthy fats, 30% carbohydrates. The last 10% goes towards a small treat or protein/fat (for rest days) or carbohydrates (for training days).
3. Track your calories. If you are trying training for weight loss, lower your intake by 300 calories every few weeks.
4. Enjoy 1-2 treat meals a week.
5. Perform cardio 4 times a week for 20-30 minutes. (the shorter your cardio time the more intense it should be).
6. Perform strength training 3 times a week for 30-40 minutes.
7. Stretch daily.
8. Take a Selfie monthly (in workout clothes/swimsuit)
9. Participate and connect with your local NEM group either online or in person.
10. Identify your Target Heart Rate: 220-age * 60-85% =
11. Create a 12-week Fitness Calendar. For tips and downloadable calender click here.
12. Find accountability partners: Mentor (group leader), Supporter (friend) and Follower (someone you can guide). Find your regional leader here.
13. Be a member of our online NEM Facebook group
Contest Rules:
1. $30 opt-in payment to place into the pot. No Refunds.
2. All application will be emailed after payment is received and must be submitted by September 15th to your regional manager or online manager.
3. Submit before and after pics and story by November 22nd
4. Must connect with closest NEM group (via online or in person). Identify your local leader.
5. Must follow NEM guidelines. No extreme dieting, diet pills, detox plans allowed.
6. Time Stamp your photos with a magazine, newspaper or app. Before photos can be taken as early as Sept 1st.
Winners will be judged by Maria Kang and a NEM panel.
Criteria will be based upon:

The pot money will be divided between 19 winners:
1. FIFTEEN Regional winners (including our Canada, Europe, Asia, Africa, NZ/Australia and Latin America NEMs)
2. ONE National winner
3. THREE NEM admin/leaders
The way we will divide prize money will be:
30% NEM Winner
30% NEM Admin/leader Winner
30% NEM Regional Winners
10% Misc Fees and NEM Charity Bucket (everything will be accounted for and transparent for everyone to see)
For Example, if we have 500 entries this will be the breakdown:
$10,000 POT MONEY
$3000 Overall NEM winner
$1000 each for NEM Admin/leader winner
$200 (15 Regions: $3000) Regional leader
Leftover is $1000 which will go towards any paypal fees and the NEM charity bucket (i.e. insurance/web costs)

1. Do I need to count calories?
No. We provided a general guideline for those who want to know how to get started.
2. How do you define Detox?
We don’t recommend any program that allows less than 1200 calories/day. This was a general term used to avoid quick fix dieting. (which is detrimental in the long term)
3. I am pregnant, can I still join?
YES! To be fair, you can either use a before picture at the same time you were pregnant prior (if this is your second child) to demonstrate a healthier pregnancy. If this is your first time, please just provide your most recent picture. (BTW: we’ve had a pregnant mom grace the pages of our swimsuit calendar)
4. Can I use a ‘before’ picture that was taken earlier this year?
Please provide the picture taken in August/Sept 2017. Please submit two photos. One holding a daily newspaper and one without. You can also include a picture taken prior but it will not be used in the final judging.
5. Do I need to be a mom?
No! Stepmoms, grandmothers, mom of doggies…are all able to join!
6. Do I HAVE to join a local group?
Yes – you can either create your own (if there is no one next to you) or join the closest group either online or in person (Click here to fill out our online group leader application). The reason why this is required is to align you with positive people and create lasting, healthy friendships. The number one way to become successful is to be a part of a community that keeps you accountable. Click here for the list of all our groups!
7. Will I know the total pot money?
Yes! On Sep 15th we will announce how many people have entered and what is up for grabs! We will also announce pot updates the weeks leading up.
8. What does participation entail?
Posting online, commenting and supporting other participants, attending meetups and/or hash-tagging on social media streams. Our official hashtags are: #noexcusemom #nem2019 or #nem__local group city

What is Intermittent Fasting?

Have you ever thought about intermittent fasting (IF)? It might work for you as a busy mom since you probably already skip breakfast! IF means you are only eating during a limited time space. Normally people fast/not eat for 16 hours and eat for 8 hours of the day. Not only are you giving your body a break from eating and digesting, but many people swear that it helps them efficiently burn fat.

At the urging of doctor friends and a few popular books, I embarked on a diet plan earlier this year called intermittent fasting. The basics are that I could eat the foods I enjoyed and most of my regular meals, but it had to be within a short time frame of eight to 10 hours. Outside of that, I would stick to water, tea and black coffee.

Proponents of the plan, also known as time-restricted eating, say that intermittent fasting could help me lose weight, always a worthwhile goal. It would also give my gut a much-needed break from processing food, improve focus and lessen daily inflammation. In the long-term, it might even help me live longer.

I’ll admit, the words “intermittent fasting” sounded a little daunting. But Dr. Jason Fung, author of “The Obesity Code,” assured me that it could easily be incorporated into my daily routine.

“Anytime you’re not eating is a fast — anything above four hours is fasting,” he said. “A lot of times people eat because they have to, versus really enjoying what they are eating. If you don’t want the sandwich, skip it. Your body knows what to do, it will take your body fat. That’s why you carry it around with you.” Read the full article here

All of us have a unique journey and joined this challenge in hopes to accomplish different things. For me personally, these past 3 months have been life changing. I was in a very dark place mentally and hated myself and had so much self doubt. I allowed myself to let someone else make me feel like I was not worthy or good enough and it really took a long time to get over it.
Looking back on this now, I wonder why it is that I let this person control my thoughts in such a way. I was completely miserable in this relationship but yet thought I wanted it more than anything. I tried hanging on desperately to this person, thinking that if he didn’t want to be with me then it must be that I am unattractive, old and unwanted. I started noticing the lines on my face more and hating them. Even considered botox or fillers (which I have not done, but did try a few chemical peels and microneedling). I noticed my stretch marks more and hated to look in the mirror at myself.
This journey for me has not been so much about losing weight as it has been about loving myself and pushing myself to be a better person. Motivating others has always helped me stay motivated myself and being a part of this group and challenge has done just that. I have seen both my mind and body transform in just such a short time. I have not allowed myself to look at my before pictures until just this morning and I am absolutely amazed and proud. I am in such a brighter and happier place than I have been in a very long time. I have let go of my demons and focused on myself and my health and it is paying off. I know now where I want to go and where I want to be and that is right now, in this moment, in the beautiful machine that God has given me.
After all, if we don’t fight for ourselves and love ourselves then this life is for nothing. I am looking up to the future and even still in my 40’s I am gonna embrace the 50’s when I get there with a stronger mind, stronger body and stronger soul. I am after all who I am and must do what I can to stay healthy both mentally and physically. I still have a lot to work on, making better food choices on the weekends when I am out running errands. The weekends seem to be hard on most of us. I did have a few weekend binges with the pity ice cream along the way, but have been better about stopping and thinking before I get started, because all it takes is one bite! This is not a journey that ends here for me. I have a long way to go and now that I believe in myself and can see first hand what these changes can do for me, I will continue with the process. I still have my 3 month calendar that I am using to keep track of each workout. I have been very good about writing everything down and tracking my food. I plan on continuing this process even though this challenge is over. This is just the beginning for me! I am proud of all the women and momma’s who took this challenge and am inspired by every single one of them. Thank you NEM!!!

Our 2nd Place leader winner is: Courtney Morgan of Whangarei, New Zealand! This her story:
I started this 12 week challenge because I needed help. The last year I have been struggling on my own with post-natal depression.  I finally had had enough and went to the doctor because it was so bad I was thinking of ending my life. The things that kept me going were my 2 gorgeous children.  I opened up to my best friend and she urged me to get help and do something. I started antidepressants a week or two before this challenge started and that gave me just enough motivation to join up.
I knew it would make me feel better but when you are in such a dark place you don’t think like that. So I started exercise again after over a year post baby number 2. The effect on my mental status was almost immediate. I did not cry every day or even think my dark thoughts. I began to have fun with my children again and not snap at the smallest thing like spilt milk.
Apart from the amazing mental benefit that this challenge has given me the physical benefit has been amazing too. I have lost weight and toned up enough to fit back into my pre baby clothes!! This is great motivation to keep going.
The other benefit I have seen in modifying my diet is how my knee has been a lot less painful. This has been great to know I can exercise without my knee hurting all the time.
Overall this challenge has made me be accountable for my family. I have come out of a dark place and into this happy place. My babies can see me laugh and play with them every day now and I know this is what brings us together.
This is just the start of my healing journey and I want to be a more active leader. I will share my story and motivate other mums in my community to be healthier in mind body and spirit.
As a leader of NEM Whangarei I organized a dinner out. This was a great chance to get out and have fun together as mums. We talked about our challenges and rewards that life gives us. I posted 4 workouts a week on our page and got lots of comments from our group. Some say there are new exercises that they are trying which is great!! I shared my vision board with the group to give my mums an idea of what motivates me. We have had lots of mums post on the page their achievements physically and new events that they are entering. I plan on entering a team in The Beast which is a mud run and lots of fun and a great way to do team building.
After 12 weeks this challenge has transformed my mind from saying I can’t do something to I can do anything!! I am so proud of what I have achieved and I will share my journey with all my family and friends.

Congrats to our 3rd place winner: Laura Meith of Alameda, CA! Here is her story:
Thanks to No Excuses and my incredible local group, I have completely transformed my body. Before No excuses, I spent my entire life obese. I was always active and even fit but I was always over 200+ pounds on my short 5’3″ body and it hurt. No Excuses changed my life! I joined here in Alameda early in 2016. My awesome Leader, Liz, saw potential in me even before I did and quickly made me a Leader. I worked out hard and started feeling so much better and stronger. In 2017, I accepted my first challenge to actually consider eating better (drinking less) mixed with the beautiful balance of our cardio work outs. It worked! Now, two years into my journey towards health and fitness I have lost 50 pounds. 50! I’ll continue to dedicate my Friday and Saturday mornings to lead my local NEM work out group as a thanks for the wonderful support and guidance NEM has given me.
This challenge I lost 12 pounds of body fat, 7.5 inches off my body and gained 3.5 pounds of muscle. Today I am weighing in at 157, finally out of the obese category and very much looking forward to continuing my journey alongside my fellow NEM’s forever. My local team has decided to keep our active side page going with the menu, food and motivation because it works! I tell them all the time, no matter where we are in this journey it is hard work.
