2017 Region 9 Winner: Rachel Hokunani

Isn’t it funny how 12 weeks can simultaneously drag on and go by in the blink of an eye? I have changed not only physically, I lost 16.6 lbs and 18 inches, I have gained a new appreciation of what I am capable of mentally as well.
You see, this was not my first NEM 12 week challenge I joined. I actually signed up in 2015 but never finished the challenge. I joked for years that I was on the, “I’ll start tomorrow” diet. I let my challenges become my excuses. I am a busy mom of 3 boys, we homeschool, I’m a military wife, and the big one… our middle son was diagnosed with a brain tumor. When you have a child with a life threatening illness everything else falls off the radar. We are the lucky ones though and are so thankful that our 5 year old is thriving despite his tumor.
When I saw this challenge I decided to put my excuses to the side and thrive despite them! My husband is an active duty U.S. Marine and left on a deployment overseas shortly before this challenge began. I knew pouring myself into my workouts and maintaining a routine would be great for my physical and mental health. I had to be strong for our children as all the parenting and household duties were now on my shoulders.
I began by changing my diet. I stopped fueling my body with soda and fast food. I started to incorporate more fruits, veggies, good carbs, and healthy protein sources. I tracked what I ate. I read the No Excuse Diet book, listened to the advice from the NEM professionals, and researched healthy foods. I found what worked for my body and am continuing to see results despite a few bumps, or a few pieces of Halloween candy. I no longer worry about eating perfectly all the time but think about making the best choices.
I made the commitment to go to the gym as much as possible, often 6 days a week and to attend the weekly NEM park workouts. I actually look forward to working out now.
I have also gained new friendships and felt the support of like minded women both online in the No Excuse Moms Facebook group and also more recently in person through our newly formed Oceanside NEM group. The sense of community and knowing I am not alone in this journey has been so heartwarming and empowering.
As the weight and inches came off I noticed a change within myself. I discovered I no longer cringed when trying on clothes and the tears I cried had nothing to do with the reflection staring back at me in the mirror. I smile a lot (smiling is my favorite) and that hasn’t changed but I no longer place a child in front of me in photos. I can stand with pride in my accomplishments with my boys by my side.
