2017 Region 5 Winner: Kim Kalajian

Kim’s Diary
Here I am, days before I turn 51, starting yet another journey on my road to becoming healthy.  What will be different this time?

This journey feels different because of NEM.  This is the first time I am accountable to so many people and my first attempt at using a fitness calendar.  I’m very excited!
This past year, I thought – this is middle age: overweight, flabby arms, gray hair, and a few wrinkles.  I came to some acceptance of this.

Then we moved to Chicago to be near my daughter.  It was then that she convinced me to join Facebook and NEM.  I agreed, but wasn’t sure this group was for me.  My first thoughts were, “I’m not sure I fit in; you are all young mothers, I’m a grandmother!”  Well, come to find out, I do fit in!  Not only am I a grandmother, but a mother to my daughters who still need me to set an example of loving yourself enough to be healthy.
I have gone up and down in weight, tried many different diets, and bought many different gimmicks sure to help me look the way I did thirty years ago.  This time I am trying something new: MyFitnessPal, watching macros, exercising more, and participating in NEM workouts and online.  I have read many success stories that give me inspiration and convince me that I can succeed this time.
In 2006, all four of my immediate family members were diagnosed with breast cancer and I feared that I was next.  I did the genetic testing and found out that I didn’t carry the abnormal gene.  The day I found out was the day my grandson was born; what a joyous day that was!  I was so afraid that my daughters and grandchildren may carry the gene through my bloodline.  Finding out that I did not carry any known gene was relieving to say the least; however, my doctor told me that I still had familial risk.  She asked,

“Do you drink?”
“No, I quit 22 years ago.”
“Do you smoke?”
“Nope, I quit 13 years ago.”
“Okay, so now we have to look at your weight…”
Overweight and in the obese category on the BMI chart!  I have made efforts to lose weight, but have not been successful.  This is my last cancer risk I need to overcome.
I want to be here for my children and grandchildren.  I want to live a long and healthy life.  I am worth every bit of effort it takes to achieve my goals and maintain them!  I can’t say that I will never have cancer in my life, but I can say that I have tried my best to prevent it.
What a journey! I started these 12 weeks with a goal of losing 25 pounds, and I lost 27.4! I have tried new ways to exercise (Zumba and HIIT workouts!), built muscle, and feel better about my body than I have in years!
