2017 Region 11 Winner: Alison Drover

An examination of the walls in my house one day, trying to decide on paint colours, gave me a rude awakening. Of all the photos hanging on the walls, there were virtually no pictures of me. A few family snaps taken from far away, but no formal family portraits. Nothing. I was almost 43 years old, and had somehow given up on myself. In erasing myself from the walls of my house, I was erasing who I could actually be.
I found the NEM group in 2016, when I did my first ever 12-week challenge. That challenge gave me a sense of self back, and feeling of accomplishment. At that time, I was feeling really low. I was lost – lost in my own life. Huge workload at a busy career, chasing two active kids, struggling to find partner time with my husband. I was overwhelmed with anxiety, depression and stress. I was wading into my 40’s and struggling to maintain the health and fitness of my 30’s. The 12-week Challenge was my way of proving that ‘I still had it”. It also brought me the NEM main Facebook group and my closest local group – the NEM Hamilton Facebook group led by the amazing Lise-Anne Fillion. I dropped 12 pounds and multiple inches, got stronger, and felt accomplished.
Post-challenge, something changed. I was exhausted and generally unwell. I was gaining weight and feeling awful. I let this go on for far too long, and finally blood tests confirmed Hashimoto’s disease – an autoimmune disorder that makes your thyroid practically stop working. And causes weight gain, low energy, anxiety, and a host of other things. So at least I had a reason for my state. But not an excuse.
One day, Maria Kang made a post that really hit me:
You don’t know what you’re made of until you dig real deep into your soul and unearth the infinite being that existed before the kids, the marriage, the work, the obligations and the ultimate stress we impose on ourselves. Wherever you are today, after you have read this – that moment has passed, it’s history! It’s gone. Every minute passed is a moment that will never happen again. YOU can change the direction of your future once you stop looking back and start looking forward.
So I joined the 2017 NEM Challenge – remembering how good it had been for me previously. In spite of the health issues – the slow weight loss and low energy of Hashimotos – I could control my direction. In spite of the extra work stress – including two 1-week long work trips that took me away from my regular routine – I could control my direction. In spite of my kids’ hectic schedules – I could control my direction.
I worked so hard – and even had a final hurdle thrown at me in the form of a kidney stone in the final 3 weeks of the challenge – I kept going. Not only did I keep going, but I found a love for running again, joined a 5 KM running clinic, registered for a 5 KM race for December 30th, and got myself re-certified as a fitness instructor – something I had put off because of my lack of confidence.
11 pounds, 19 inches overall, a boat load of confidence, and a brand new beautiful family photo hanging in my living room.
